The town of Avis that in the thirteenth century gave it's name to the Order of Avis, and later to the second Portuguese dynasty, is in the district of Portalegre in High Alentejo.

You can see at the entrance to Vila or the Angel Entrance and the Queen's Tower, the Church and Convent of the Saint Benedict that now hosts a permanent exhibition on the Sacred and the Profane (not to be missed).

Municipal Museum - Archaeology and Ethnography, located in the former Convent's Dining Room, with Manueline vaults and the mouth of the cistern in eight-pointed star (XVI).

In the ancient Old Town Square is the Mother Church (XV-XVII). Continuing, one finds the elegant set of the former Mercy, S. Roque and St. António Towers and to end with beautiful views, the Garden of the Master of Avis.
