The typical and white town of Estremoz always played an important role in the history of Portugal. Either the battlefield between Portuguese and Spanish either scene of civil war between absolutists (D. Miguel, king of Portugal) and liberals (D. Pedro I of Brazil), legend and reality merge on the streets and alleys of the medieval streets of Estremoz. It was actually, in this city that the the Miracle of the Roses happened. According to the legend Queen Isabel, wife of King D. Dinis, was surprised by her husband in one of her many charity activities. One day, while carrying in her lap, bread for the poor, the king asked her to show what she was taking. On showing the content, the bread turned into roses. The city is still today surrounded by fortifications of the XVII century. With dozens of churches, two convents, the former palace of King D. Dinis (1261-1325), the Rural Museum, the Museum of Sacred Art and dozens of good restaurants, Estremoz is a remarkable showcase of the people, arts and tastes of Alentejo.
