The Alqueva dam is the largest Portuguese dam, located on the river Guadiana in the Alentejo countryside, near the village of Alqueva.
It reaches 96 m above the foundation and a crowning length of 458 m. The reservoir when full to it's maximum quota reaches 250 sq km, and is the largest artificial lake in Europe.
It was built for the purpose of irrigating Alentejo throughout and electricity generation, in addition to other complementary activities.
It is also an important leisure centre where one can engage in water sports, fishing for Acchigã or just boating.
