The origins of Marvão back to the Roman period, when it was known as the Fortress of Ammaia. It would have been a fortress protecting the city of Ammaia, founded in the I century overlooking a valley and which traces can be visited today. After being occupied by Muslims, Marvão was regained between 1190 and 1191 by the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Heriques to play throughout history an important strategic role due to its stunning location at 800 meters.
