The medieval castle of Monsaraz, with its unique view over Lake Alqueva and the white of the houses, has the unique ability to make it´s visitors travel in time.

As with many other castles in Alentejo, the walled town was conquered from the Moors by the mercenary adventurer Geraldo Without Fear and was also the scene of battles between Portugal and Spain, over time.

Its inhabitants lived on agriculture and river fishing, abounding along the Guadiana river, the water mills, at least since the thirteenth century.

The area is rich in wine production, with emphasis on the Herdade do Esporão and Adega Ervideira, and the crafts of São Pedro do Corval and megalithic monuments, with emphasis on the menhir Bulhões and menhir Outeiro.
