Situated near the banks of the river Mira, the city of Odemira was conquered to the Arabs by D. Afonso Henriques, in 1166. Its provincial law was register in 1256, by D. Afonso III. By many years Odemira was inhabited by the Romans and the Arabs, who constructed a castle in the town centre, named Wadi Emir. During the XIX century the liberals developed the district, which is nowadays one of the biggest councils of the country. It is also one of the most visited because of its beautiful beaches, fields and mountains. Odemira is also known for its ceramic industry and the visitors can discover the local production of this type of handicrafts.
