Since Roman times, when it was part of the route that connected Lisbon to Merida, did Ponte de Sôr become known. In the origin of its foundation is the Roman bridge that gave it it's name. The region of which Ponte de Sor is part was property of the Order of the Templars and received over the centuries the most important benefits from the most important monarchs D. Sancho I, D. Dinis, D. Fernando and D. Manuel, who gives it new charter in 1514.
