On the shoulders of the Guadiana River and sitting next to an aqueduct, Serpa is today renowned not so much because of its considerable heritage but mainly because of its cheeses, some of the best in Alentejo. Therefore, between visits to the monuments of the city, you should not miss the opportunity to visit one of many producers of cheese in Serpa. Now back to the village, past the castellated entrance, we suggest you visit the Moorish Castle, rebuilt in the XIII century by D. Dinis. Near this building is the church of Santa Maria, built in 300 on the foundations of an Arab mosque. Witness of the vitality of the town in the XIV century is the Clock Tower, still accessible to visitors via a wooden staircase.
