The village of Vaiamonte lies between the village of Monforte (Seat of County) and Cabeço of Vide. The first written records about the town date back to the beginning of XIII century. On 1240 D. Sancho II took Vaiamonte from the Moors, donating it then to the Order of St. Tiago. The origin of its name would be the result of a small hill called the Monte das Freiras, which was owned by the convent of the nuns and the Third Order of St. Francisco. By using the phrase "where are you going?" "I am going to the hill" would then result in "vaia-ao-monte". With a population of about 560 inhabitants today it is a nice and quiet village in the middle of the Alentejo plain, geared primarily for Agriculture and Livestock.
