Founded by the Romans, Elvas was finally conquered from the Moors in 1229 by D. Sancho III. Three centuries later, during the reign of Philip II, it served as the reign capital of the Iberian Peninsula, even if only for a few months. In fact, it is its proximity to Spain, with Badajoz on the horizon, what marks more the history and architecture of Elvas. The forts of Santa Luzia and Our Lady of Grace are examples of frequent border wars between Portugal and Spain, with which were waged great battles and great marriages.
