The origin of Portalegre is in the reign of Afonso III, who ordered the reconstruction of the town of Portelos, destroyed by the fighting between Muslims and Christians, granted it the privilege of town and its charter. Won then in 1259, the name of Portus Alacer (place of transit of goods / beautiful location), turning over time into Portalegre. Also in the XIII century, king D. Dinis built a wall to defend the town, which had seven gates, of which there are still the gates of Devesa, of Bishop and of St. Anthony. During major national crisis it distinguished itself by it´s fidelity and constancy. Hence, the colors of the town are yellow and black, symbolizing, according to many, the loyalty and steadfastness of its people.
