In the heart of Alentejo, between Beja and Évora, the town of Portel is a pole of historic interest. The castle, dating from the XIII century, was the scene of reference in Castela's independence war. It was also in this town that Prince Henry the Navigator met his family to decide whether to surrender the fortress of Ceuta to rescue his younger brother D. Fernando, who was being held captive in the North of Africa. The answer was negative thus condemning him to spend the rest of his life in the dungeon of Fez. Around Portel is the Cellar of Herdade do Meio, where you can enjoy excelent Alentejo wines and visit the cellar.
