Quinta do Quetzal Wine Tastings
1 / 6
Quinta do Quetzal is set in the heart of the Alentejo region on the rich slopes of Vidigueira. It is close to the oldest known Roman winery in Portugal and Spain. The microclimate and our hills make it the perfect location for a unique terroir. Here the grapes grow on soil rich in Schist, our local mineral stone.

The area around Vidigueira is generally sunny and warm, but its positioning on the foothills of the Serra do Mendro gives plenty of cool winds that comes straight off the Atlantic ocean. These conditions lead to big variations in temperature, giving the grapes the heat to ripe and the cooling breezes to recover. The focus is on limited production of concentrated and top quality grapes in order to create a wine that expresses the character of the surroundings.

The hills of Vila de Frades were also the place chosen in Antiquity by a wealthy Roman from Pax Iulia, now known as Beja, to build his villa, which was later named after São Cucufate, the martyred Spanish saint Cucaphas. This is the oldest known winery on the whole of the Iberian Peninsula. Visit the Roman ruins of São Cucufate, which were the source of inspiration for the bold decisions taken when building the Quetzal Winery, which embodies the parallels between the ancient and the modern and incorporates the wealth of what we have learned from the Romans.

After learning the secrets of Quetzal wine production, take a stroll in the vineyards and get a close-up view of this unique terroir.

End your visit with lunch in the relaxed, friendly ambience of our restaurant and enjoy our wines, accompanied by local produce in season prepared the traditional, old-fashioned way with a special modern twist by Chef Pedro Mendes.
