Alter do Chão

In the middle Ages, in the sixteenth century, the town gained prosperity due to textiles. Much of the beautiful buildings of Alter do Chão are from that time.

But the town's castle was built two centuries before, in 1359, by king D. Pedro, eternal lover of Dona Inês de Castro. It now houses an art gallery and a library.

Only 4 kilometers to the northwest of the town is the renowned Stud Farm of Alter do Chão, a farm of 300 hectares. It was in 1748 that king John V of the House of Bragança founded this centenary institution, which imported mares from Andalusia in order to produce race Lusitano horses, today so appreciated around the world.
