A Herdade dos Mestres is a typical Alentejo farm with about 90 hectares, located between the city of Reguengos de Monsaraz and raiana town of Alandroal, a few kilometers from Alqueva, the largest artificial in Europe.

Herdade dos Mestres is a typical estate in the Alentejo region with approximately 222 acres of surrounding grounds and located between the city of Reguengos de Monsaraz and Vila Raiana do Alandroal, a few kilometres from Alqueva, the largest artificial lake in Europe. Our estate, with direct access to National Highway 255, enjoys views of an endless landscape, dotted with legendary trees that do not unveil their age - Holm oaks, olive trees and almond trees- and an intense blue sky, transformed into a spectacle of stars at night, conveying a sense of repose and tranquillity.

Herdade dos Mestres has six rooms and an apartment for 4 to 6 people. Four of the rooms are in the oldest wing of the house (dating back to 1913), while the others are located on the newer part of the estate.

All the rooms are unique and their décor inspired by the art of a master artisan, thus allowing our guests to learn more about local crafts and these masters of the Alentejo, who still conserve the knowledge, art and trades of former times.

A cot can be placed in any of the rooms and both double and twin rooms are available. They all have a private bathroom, air conditioning, television and free Wi-Fi.

The baker-themed apartment is one-bedroomed, consisting of a suite, living room with a sofa bed for two, an integrated kitchen and dining area, a second bathroom and a small mezzanine which may be used as a children's playroom or bedroom (6-12 years).

Our fields, characterised by their evergreen in winter, blossoming flowers in Spring, golden plains at the onset of Summer which turn ochre to welcome Autumn, are the prime location for walking, cycling and all-terrain trips, or simply just to appreciate nature and the fragrant lavender while enjoying a pleasant picnic.

From the countryside to the shale cliffs and the stream that meanders throughout the estate, Herdade dos Mestres offers an abundance and diversity of activities.

Herdade dos Mestres offers its guests an unforgettable experience, enabling them to learn a little more about the history of Portugal, and the arts and crafts of the Alentejo. We eagerly await your visit!

Herdade dos Mestres is a traditional rough-cast Alentejo's building, painted white with a blue base and a gable roof covering a single floor at ground level. The exterior balconies which run along the whole building are prime spots for taking in the views, while offering shade and protection from the sun and wind. The thick walls and small windows retain the heat in Winter and keep the house cool in Summer. Finally, the huge chimneys extract the smoke of the open fires which bring warmth to the cold evenings.

Herdade dos Mestres has six rooms (double and twin) and an apartment for up to six people. Four of the rooms are in the oldest wing of the house (dating back to 1913), while the others are located on the newer side. As we want our guests to feel at home, there is also a room with a fireplace where one can relax and listen to the crackling flames, a pleasant breakfast room, two cosy sitting rooms, a games room, bar and two spacious porches.

Our estate is a country house which offers the simplicity and tradition of the Alentejo coupled with the comfort of modern life and environmental sustainability. Given that the Alentejo region benefits from long periods of sun, Herdade dos Mestres uses solar energy in its panels to heat water and produce electricity.

Herdade dos Mestres is in a privileged geographical location, since it is surrounded by many places and points of interest that can be enjoyed by our guests whether through our activity programmes, or explored at their own leisure. These range from the medieval castles and fortifications, the megalithic route, Alqueva, nautical sports and handicrafts to local gastronomy.

Nature is stunning at the Herdade dos Mestres, with its shale cliffs and the stream meandering across the landscape. There is no end to the experiences offered by Herdade dos Mestres!

Our fields, characterised by their evergreen in winter, blossoming flowers in Spring, golden plains at the onset of Summer which turn ochre to welcome Autumn, are the prime location for walking, cycling and all-terrain trips. If you enjoy direct contact with nature, do not forget to order a tasty picnic lunch, supplied in a basket to be enjoyed beneath the shade of a Holm oak tree or at the side of the stream.

We also offer our guests the opportunity to enjoy nautical sports in Alqueva, to take a guided archaeological tour following the megalithic route, and even walks to observe the fauna and flora or historical points of interest. Observing the sky at the Alqueva Dark Sky Reserve is another activity not to be missed.

If you appreciate more tranquil or solitary activities, you may also enjoy the sun and experience nature by reading a book under the shade of a Holm oak tree, drinking a quality wine from the Alentejo region on our verandas, or relaxing and observing the magnificent sunset of the Alentejo.

We can also put you in contact with the local master artisans, to learn more about, or even to actually learn the techniques of their art.

We invite our guests to visit the three castles of Alandroal, Juromenha and Terena, in the county of Alandroal. The Pastel de Nata de Bolota, [custard pastries made from acorn flour]a local speciality, is an absolute must!.

Just a few kilometres away, our guests can also visit the medieval town of Monsaraz, which is protected by its walls, from which a wonderful, typical Alentejano view of Alequeva and the surrounding countryside may be observed, A visit to the Fábrica Alentejana de Lanifícios de Reguengos de Monsaraz [Wool Factory] is also recommended, where the artisans may be seen working on old, semi-manual weaving looms, or to the village of São Pedro do Corval, which has the biggest concentration of potters in the country.

For the lovers of wine tourism, Reguengos de Monsaraz, European Wine City 2015, is definitely worth a visit, where one may stop by at the wine cellars of the region and try the rich gastronomy of the restaurants, with specialities such as migas, gaspacho, sopa de cação, sericaia, bolo de requeijão or bolo de amêndoa and gila.

Herdade dos Mestres offers the most unforgettable experience. We eagerly await your visit!
