Estremoz
The typical white town of Estremoz has played an important role in the history of Alentejo and Portugal. It has served as a stage for the battles between Portuguese and Castilians and civil war between absolutists (D. Miguel, king of Portugal) and liberals (D. Pedro I of Brazil). Legend and reality are mixed in the streets and medieval alleys of Estremoz. It has also been in this city where it has been produced in Milagro de las Rosas. It is said that one day, Queen D. Isabel, determined to help the poorest, had filled her lap with loaves to distribute. But her husband, King Dinis, took her, and asked her where she was going and which she carried in her lap. The queen answered: "They are roses, Lord!" In effect, when he opened it, roses had sprouted from his lap and not the loaves he had hidden. The city is still surrounded by 17th century fortifications. It has dozens of churches, two convents, an old palace of King D. Dinis (1261-1325), a Rural Museum, a Museum of Sacred Art and several great restaurants. Estremoz is a remarkable showcase of people, flavors and arts of the Alentejo.
